Unwanted Fire Hearths Removed

Here we show you a step by step removal of the concreted fire hearth, turning the ugly old fashioned, undesirable feature into more than useful floor space.

The first image shows the ugly concrete hearth making the room look untidy. The second image shows how we have transformed this area, matching it to the original existing floor. All that is required now, is a carpenter to blend in a new peice of skirting and... 'Voila!'

The sequence from image 3-7 takes you through the removal of the boards in a pattern to step the joins which helps hide the repair.
Next the concrete slab is broken up and removed.
A joist is then screwed into place to bridge the gap and support the boards.
Then a mixture of salvaged existing boards and new ones are cut to size and fixed in place.
Then during sanding the repaired area is blended in.
Once sanded and a primer coat has sealed the whole floor, we colour match the new boards to hide their existence.
With a final coat of lacquer it is hard to believe there was ever a fire place at all!

Tongue and Groove Boards (T+G)

To access under or into a T+G floor, you have to first remove the tongues from above with a skill saw. This is a very delicate operation as you DO NOT want to destroy the boards to disguise the access once re-fitted. T+G floors are often fixed with secret nails, so these too have to be sawn through during the process.
Therefore, to patch in a T+G floor during the fire hearth removal process, great care and planning is required.
This can be even more difficult with narrow boards especially if originally laid to what is now a very rare 'Oregon Pine', or 'Douglas Fir' as shown. The reclaim purchase can cost as much as £100 per sqM if you can locate any, so waste is not an option!
